The farm

Loma del Ovejo is Rafael Arcángel Barillas Zambrano's farm in Río Arriba, Canaguá, in the Pueblos del Sur of Mérida. Small plots worked by hand by families who have lived in these mountains for generations. Ripe cherries are hand-picked, washed and sun-dried.

The place

Above 1,900 metres, the cool climate slows the ripening of the fruit. Altitude, Andean soils and abundant water have made Canaguá one of the most coffee-focused areas of Mérida.

Story

In the mountains of Río Arriba, in Canaguá, where the Venezuelan Andes reach altitudes suited to complex coffees, lies Loma del Ovejo, the farm of Rafael Arcángel Barillas Zambrano.
Coffee here is part of daily life for families who have farmed these mountains for generations, on small plots where manual work is still the norm and each harvest relies on knowledge built up over years.
At 1,900 to 1,960 metres above sea level, Loma del Ovejo benefits from the cool climate of the Pueblos del Sur of Mérida, which slows cherry ripening. Altitude, Andean soils and abundant water have made Canaguá one of the most coffee-oriented areas of Mérida state.
Rafael grows a mix of traditional and modern varieties — Caturra, Catuai, Monte Claro, Araguaney, Colombia 27 and Castillo — to keep the farm productive without losing the character of mountain coffee. Harvest is by hand, picking only ripe cherries, followed by washed processing and sun drying.
Loma del Ovejo represents the many producers in Canaguá who stayed on the land through the hardest years for Venezuelan coffee growing.
